We're excited to announce that Hikari is now live and accepting bookings for the 2025-26 winter season across Niseko and Rusutsu in Hokkaido, Japan.
The Problem We're Solving
As ski instructors with experience teaching across Australia, North America, and Japan, our founding team has seen the same problem play out repeatedly: clients buy ski lessons and are allocated an instructor from a pool.
But a ski instructor doesn't just help you improve your technique. They reassure you when you're nervous, joke with you on the chairlifts, and show you the best spots on the mountain. Depending on your lesson length, you could spend all day or even all week with them.
That's why it matters who you choose. You need an instructor who delivers a great lesson and someone you can gel with personally.
With Hikari, you don't just buy a ski lesson—you choose your instructor.
Looking for someone excellent with kids? Choose them. Want an instructor who's great conversation on the chairlift? Choose them. Simply need someone who'll ski hard with you? Choose them.
Anyone who's had a truly great ski instructor knows the difference this makes. The right instructor doesn't just teach you to ski; they build your confidence, adapt to your learning style, and help you progress faster than you thought possible.

How Hikari Works
Hikari operates as a marketplace connecting winter sports enthusiasts with certified ski and snowboard instructors across Hokkaido's premier resorts. Here's what makes us different:
Browse instructor profiles: Each instructor on our platform has a detailed profile showing their qualifications, years of experience, teaching specialties (beginners, children, off-piste, adaptive programs, etc.), and what makes their approach unique. You can see exactly who you're booking with.
Choose based on your needs: Looking for someone patient with nervous adults? An expert in powder skiing technique? An instructor certified in adaptive programs? You can view profiles and select based an instructor based on what matters most to your group.
Book with confidence: All our instructors are certified professionals working with established ski schools. We verify qualifications, check certifications, and partner only with schools that share our commitment to professional service delivery.
Why This Matters
The difference between an average ski lesson and an exceptional one often comes down to the match between instructor and student. Teaching style, communication approach, and personality compatibility significantly impact learning outcomes and enjoyment.
By giving you the power to choose your instructor, we're putting you in control of one of the most important variables in your ski trip. You can read about each instructor's teaching philosophy, see their specialties, and make an informed decision about who's right for you or your family.
This matters especially for:
Nervous beginners who need an instructor with exceptional patience and encouragement
Families with children seeking instructors experienced with young learners
Advanced skiers looking for specific technical coaching or off-piste expertise
Groups with diverse abilities needing an instructor skilled at managing mixed-level lessons
Visitors seeking cultural connection who want an instructor familiar with Japanese ski culture and etiquette
Operating in Hokkaido's Powder Paradise
We've launched in Niseko and Rusutsu for a reason. Hokkaido receives some of the world's most consistent, lightest powder snow, thanks to cold Siberian air masses combining with moisture from the Sea of Japan. It's a world-class destination that attracts skiers from across the globe—and it deserves a booking platform that matches the quality of the skiing.
Our Team
Hikari was founded by Alice Vigneron, Jack Lacey, Shane Winterhalter, and Jack Reid—three ski instructors (and a web developer) who experienced the same frustrations with traditional ski school models. We've taught at resorts across three continents and collectively hold certifications including APSI, CSIA, and BASI qualifications. We know what makes great instruction because we've lived it.
